I have recurring UTI. In fact, I don’t remember a year that I’ve been clear of having urinary tract infection. I know the causes that contribute to it, but sometimes, bad habits are hard to break. But I have been trying the past months to NOT have UTI because the medicine is just expensive, and the additional expenses can be avoided, so I might as well try right?
UTI is “easily” preventable, with the practice of good hygiene and vigilance in taking in enough water to flush the bacteria out of your body.
So far, I have been UTI-free for the past couple of months, thanks to these practices:
1. Drink LOTS of water. I usually drank 2 liters a day, sometimes less, but the past months I made sure I drank at least 4-5 liters each day. This keeps me hydrated throughout the day, and also keeps my body cleansed with regular flushing of toxins and bacteria.
2. Change your underwear AT LEAST twice a day. Avoid wearing liners, if you can. I used to wear liners when I was still working. And sometimes kept the same liner on until I got home. This isn’t good, and particularly unhygienic. I stopped wearing liners, and changed to cotton panties as much as I can, saving the silk, nylon or spandex for other occasions. This helps our vajayjay breathe freely, preventing infections. If you do have to wear liners, just make sure you change when there’s discharge already, or every 4-6 hours.
3. Wash your underwear by hand. Avoid dumping it in with the rest of the clothes in the washing machine. And use soap such as Perla or any anti-bacterial soap like Safeguard. This ensures that your underwear doesn’t have any harmful chemicals that may irritate your vajayjay.
4. When nature calls, make sure you answer. Yes, even if you’re in the middle of a deadline, in a meeting with the top honchos or whatever it is you’re doing. Drop everything and just go. I used to hold it in a lot, but this isn’t healthy, and certainly is a big factor causing UTI. So don’t hold it in, please.
5. Use a gentle cleanser for your vajayjay. I now allot two days in a week where I just wash with vinegar diluted in water. I use apple cider vinegar, by the way. This is a good antiseptic, and gets rid of the bad bacteria without the chemicals.
6. Probiotics. Yes, that’s right. Yakult or yogurt contains lactobacilli , which is a beneficial bacteria good not only for the stomach but for our vagina.
So you see? It’s not that hard to keep the bad bacteria away. Keeping ourselves free from infection is one step towards preventing more serious illnesses.
